Preparing your scrapbook layouts for inclusion in a bound photobook can seem like a daunting task at times, but it really is a simple process that gets easier with every book you create.

1. Choose the size and type of book. If you scrap in square format there are eight options to choose from. All square format books use the 12x12 master page set up, and then you can select the size you wish to purchase when you check out. We also offer a variety of other sizes including 8.2 x 11 in portrait/vertical format.

2. Check to be sure that nothing important is within a 1/2" of any edge. You can see more detail about this in the Design Guidelines section and also download png templates to help you check your layouts.

3. If you find that your layouts have important elements in the crop zone, you have a few quick options. One of them is to resize your layout by 1/2" and then substitute a full size copy of your background paper. If you are working with flattened files you can resize and add the background paper as a new layer or add a complimentary color as the new background to fill in that 1/2" area.

4. Before uploading your jpeg files you might find it helpful to rename them by page number i.e. 01, 07, 14, 34, 57 etc. That way they will automatically appear in the order they should be for your book. The image you select as your "gallery favorite" will automatically become your cover image. Remember the first page in all books is a single right hand page, so plan your double page layouts accordingly.

5. Once all your layouts are uploaded and you have double checked that your pages are in the order you want them to appear you are ready to order your book.

6. We recommend our ((Viovio ((Viovio ((Viovio ((Viovio ((Viovio ((Viovio ((Viovio ((Viovio Viovio Book Designer as it has nice drag and drop interface. If you are using the ((Viovio ((Viovio ((Viovio ((Viovio Viovio Book Machine, choose the following options: full-bleed, no captions, auto crop. Make sure your cover page is what you want and that you select a back cover image, unless you are doing a full wrap cover. You will have an opportunity to preview your cover further into the book creation process. If you are making a 10x10 or 12x12 book you do not need to design a cover as they are only available in case wrap materials.

7. If you already have text on your cover, you can just delete the default title information. If your book is large enough you can have text placed on the spine.

8. Review the PDF preview file carefully for any typos, cropping issues or anything else you wish to correct before finalizing your order.

9. If you did need to make some corrections, be sure to regenerate your book and check the second preview before placing your order.

10. Enjoy showing off your layouts in your new bound book!

I wish I'd seen this page before buying a few actions to check bleed and resize (that's what I get for not looking around!) This was a VERY helpful article (especially #3) and thanks for the links to templates. Going to check all the files I've already uploaded and looking forward to my first photobook!

trouble uploading

by Heather, Sun 10 of May, 2009 (19:57 UTC)
I have created my pages using adobe photoshop. (Pages are in .psd format). When I try to upload them nothing happens. The files are very large (ranging in size from 10 to 110 MEGAbites!!!). I think this may be the problem, but I don't know what to do. I'm a bit freaked as I've spent ENDLESS HOURS putting these pages together. Any advice????

Thanks for any help.

To keep the size down to about 2-3 MB save your jpegs in photoshop at 8 (medium quality) or 9 (high quality). This is probably overkill but I figure I have the storage space.

Also if you have many many pages put them in a zip file so you only have to upload one file.

Judy

p.s. Do you have lots of layers in your 110 MB files? If so flatten them.

Actually, we don't accept .psd files. We prefer one complete PDF or separate .jpg files. We recommend your images be at 300 dpi.

For all our trim sizes we recommend you make the cover images as well as the interior page images 1/4" larger than your book size. For example if you plan to create an 8.5x11 book the cover image as well as interior pages would be 8.75x11.25 (at 300 dpi).

Do you have the template software?

by Heather, Mon 20 of Apr, 2009 (07:17 UTC)
Do I find the template software for laying out and creating my pages through you or do I need to get it from another site? If from another site are there good "free" sites out there or should I be expecting to pay for a decent design/layout program download?

Thanks,

Heather

We have a few templates. They are basic backgrounds (black & white). If you want all the embellishments you will want to create the pages on your computer and upload the complete PDF to Viovio.

Most importantly, keep all important items (people, heads, text, borders) away from the outer 1/2" on all sides.

Here is a page that may help:
http://www.viovio.com/wiki/index.php?structure_id=303

We trim 1/8" on all sides and just keep in mind an 1/8" is a greater percentage of the book for our mini books than it is for say an 8.5x11 book. In other words 1/8" is a greater percentage of 5" than it is of 8.5". Does that make sense?

Last Question....I promise,

So if I want to create a 12x12 book I should make its dimensions 12 1/4" x 12 1/4" and leave my crop margins at 11 3/4" x 11 3/4" at 300dpi resolution right? I just wanted to be sure on the extra 1/4" I'm to add to my pages.

Hi, Heather,

You have the dimensions right at 12 1/4 x 12 1/4, but I want to make sure you're not actually including crop marks on the book unless you intend for them to show. Keep your content a half inch from the edges, but turn off the crop marks before saving the file for upload.
