FAQ about photo book paper and cover

Photo Book Paper Specs

What is your cover paper stock?

For all of our softcover and case wrap hardcover books our COVERS are full color, laminated 100# Ultra Gloss Cover Stock, Digital Color Silk - C2S, 90 bright.

What is your interior (text) paper stock?

Our perfect bound sizes (8.5x11 and under) use either interior digital satin (matte) paper 80# Digital color uncoated white, 96 bright, OR 80# coated digital silk (like a gloss but not glossy). Our standard paper is the digital satin, for a 15% upgrade you can elect digital silk. All books are printed with a Xerox iGen. All of our paper is acid-free.

NOTE: The terms our printer uses are 'text' for interior paper, and 'cover' for cover stock. So 100# cover stock is not the same thickness as 100# text stock!

NOTE: the digital silk paper is not the slick shiny gloss like you see in magazines. This paper describes the paper stock. It provides a protective coating on the paper. It does make the blacks stand out and the images crisp, but it won't be slick.

All of our books have roughly the same quality paper. The 14x11 is a true coated paper, and has a higher sheen, which you may or may not like. I would recommend you order a small test to find out your preference smile

Is there a minimum page count for the digital silk paper option?

No, The only requirement is your book size is one of the sizes for which we offer the digital silk paper. Here is a list of our binding specs

How do you count pages in your books?

Each side of a piece of paper is a page — just like in a novel.

Will you send me a sample?

We don't typically send out samples because our books are so inexpensive. Most creators just upload about 10 images and print a "proof" book so they have their own images to evaluate. Most photographers who plan to use our products as part of their product offering need to see their own images in print because of the differences in texture between an image on the screen and the printed image. The printed image will always be flatter than what you see on the screen. We actually tested an image on a PC that had 2 monitors installed and the image looked different on each monitor (side by side) so a little tweaking will be necessary. We do recommend the digital silk paper for photographers simply because it will enhance the look of the printed image.

More paper quality questions

by Tania, Thu 30 of Oct, 2008 (16:42 UTC)
I see that the paper you provide is acid free, but is it archival quality, near archival quality, or is it magazine quality that will begin to degrade within 20-30 years? This will be my first photo book effort, and I want the final product to LAST!

Writing on paper

I was hoping to create a wedding guest book, where people signed the pages. Which, if any, of your papers would be the best for this?

Book materials?

by Wayne Maki, Mon 20 of Aug, 2007 (00:38 UTC)
I have printed over a dozen books thru viovio, and have been thrilled with the results! I am now trying to move my business more environmentally and animal friendly, and am wondering whether the paper you use contains gelatin or any other animal product. I am also wondering whether the glues used to bind your books is animal derived. Thanks in advance for your advice.

we do offer the option to select interior page background color. That selection is made during the photo book creation stage of the process

Our 80# text paper is about 3 to 4 times thicker than your standard 20# sheet of office copy paper.
