When we started Viovio, we decided not compete with desktop applications, and we still think that is a fair strategy. Many of our members use InDesign, Photoshop, Elements, iPhoto, or Aperture to make their layouts. They then export the pages or PDF file and we print those directly.

We do understand how difficult it is for any web-based application to complete with a desktop application in terms functionality and productivity. The other option is a java-based application, but even with the latest and greatest hardware, those solutions buckle under the stress of several hundred megabytes of photos.

The bookmaker we created is for creating simple books quickly from galleries of images (a dual benefit of photo sharing and photo books). One advantage is that it can crunch through many hundreds of images more quickly than placing each of 500 pages manually. We are planning a template-based bookmaker, and finally browsers are catching up with advance of AJAX/CSS to do some pretty powerful things.

So we are moving in that direction as the software becomes more agile.

Jennifer, right now the font size for descriptions is not editable. I'll ask engineering what it would take to modify that field to be editable in terms of the fonts.
