Technical specifications about bound books available from Viovio

Detailed Specifications

DSCN2971e.jpgFor a complete list of available book sizes, binding styles and technical information, see the Product Catalog.

Software

We have two software options: the Viovio Book Designer or use the Viovio PDF Wizard with desktop software.

Covers

We offer a variety of binding types. Softbound covers are full color, laminated 100# Ultra Gloss Cover Stock, Digital Color Silk - C2S, 90 bright. Quick bound hard covers are made with high quality .088" binder's board. They have plain white head and foot bands and 80# stock black end sheets. Premium bound hard cover books also feature black end sheets. Soft cover and imagewrapped hardcover books offer spine text. Books with material covers or wire-o binding do not offer spine text.

Interior Paper

All interior pages are printed as two-sided (just like a novel). Each side of a piece of paper is a page. The 9x7 and 8.5x11 softcover books also offer a single-sided print option for a modest price increase. This option is available during the checkout process for these books.

We currently offer three kinds of paper.

  1. For the 14x11 Portfolio Photo Books, we offer 120# (218gsm) coated gloss paper stock.
  2. Our soft cover books offer 80# (115gsm) satin paper. You can upgrade the softcover paper to our Photo Silk for a 15% fee. Some soft covers, such as Mini Books, only come in Photo Silk.
  3. All hardcovers and material bound hardcover books, we offer a 100# (146gsm) light gloss Photo Silk, 96 Bright. This is a phenomenal paper that provides wonderful color, a professional smooth appearance, and long lasting binding quality.

See this photo comparing satin and photo silk.

A few notes for all sizes:
  • Books with over 160 pages add stress to the spine, therefore we recommend no more than 160 pages if your book will be handled frequently.
  • Everything is printed at 600 x 600 DPI. You need to upload your images at 300x300 dpi or your file could experience trouble going through the print process.
  • 1 sheet of paper has *two* pages. Just like a novel, each side of a piece of paper is a page. Divide max pages above by 2 to get max sheets of paper.
  • All covers are full bleed, giving you control over every single square centimeter.
  • Up to 1/4" from each edge will be CUT OFF (i.e. trimmed) using an automated process. Do not put important graphical elements (text, heads, people, etc.) within 3/4" (2cm) from any edge.
  • TRIM/CROP MARKS should NOT be included for any size.
  • Hardback covers need at least 1" (2.5cm) crop area on each edge for a complete turn in to wrap around the cover.
  • Imagewrap hardbacks require a minimum of 24 interior pages and a max of 160.
  • Soft cover books require at least 20 interior pages to perfect bind. Less than 20 pages and the book will be saddle stitched. Saddle stitched books do not have laminated covers.
  • The inner text block and the cover are different files and are created separately in the book wizard.
  • Page 1 of each book falls on the right, opposite the inside front cover, which is white. Configure your PDF reader to show continous facing pages.
  • For best results, two page spreads should include 3/4" (2cm) image overlap in the page gutter.
  • We place a discreet ghosted Viovio logo on the back cover - you can select the logo placement when you build your cover. We offer unbranding to our Professional memberships
  • Scaled trim size pricing may differ slightly than the native size pricing
  • All prices are subject to change without notice
  • Yes, we can bind books up to 700 pages. However, for books bound with more than 250 pages we don't guarantee the binding. When you get over 250 pages you risk the binding cracking after use.

300 DPI vs 600 DPI

by madge, Wed 18 of Nov, 2009 (15:15 UTC)
hi,
i was wondering several things...
1) my fotos are ~2-5MB, will printing at 300 vs 600 DPI make a difference?
2) other sites all seem to print at 300 DPI, yet you mention you print at 600DPI. is this a major differentiator or a minor one?
thanks!

Madge,

Actually, we recommend that images should be at 300 dpi and they should be .25" larger than the book you plan to create. So for an 8.5x11 book the images should be 8.75x11.25 and at 300 dpi that would be 2625x3375. So you could actually calculate the image size for any book you plan to create. That also holds true for the covers.

We also recommend that you don't have any important items within the outer 1/2" on all sides. We trim 1/8" and we ask that you allow 1/8" for safety so that is .25"

Here is a link to our book binding specs page that gives detail information on all our trim sizes (including price) http://www.viovio.com/wiki/index.php?structure_id=421

For all of our books the first page of the interior file always prints on the right. Here is a link to a picture of how this looks http://www.viovio.com/photos/image/1983/135/132/133

Ship time will depend on the ship method you select.

Wire-O Binding

by Julie, Thu 09 of Jul, 2009 (18:58 UTC)
I would love to see Wire-O Binding in smaller sized books. I have several cook books that I'm working on, and the Wire-O binding would be an ideal binding for them. I would think that others who want to publish family or personal cookbooks would like the option as well.

Julie,
That is a great idea! I know that a lot of our customers would love something like that! But for the meantime we do have a 6X9 Portrait Book. It doesn't come with Wire-O Binding but it has a great format and size for family/personal cookbooks!
