If you want to print a PDF from iPhoto here are the recommended steps

1. Create a custom "Paper Size" in the File -> Page Setup menu. This
should be 9.25"x7.25", and the Orientation should be the guy standing up
(choice on the left). Select that paper size and click OK.

2. Select File -> Print. I would upload the front cover as a separate
document. Set Pages: From 2 to ' ', and then choose PDF -> Save As PDF.
This will print just the inside of the book.

3. Select File -> Print. I would upload the front cover as a separate
document. Set Pages: From 1 to 1, and then choose PDF -> Save As PDF.
This will print just the inside the cover.

iPhoto organizes your images locally, and has a built in book maker.

Alternate PDF Sizes

Here are a few steps to create a iPhoto book PDF in a size other than the defaults used in the iPhoto bookmaking process. It requires Adobe Acrobat Professional.

  1. Save the iPhoto pdf from iPhoto (File => Print - "Save as PDF" button in dialog box)
  2. Open the saved PDF file in Acrobat and save it as a postscript file (File=>Print - "Save as poscript" file) In page setup, a scaling of around 85% will reduce the document and 11x8.5 size to 9 x 7 with bleed)
  3. Then create a PDF from the postscript file using Acrobat Distiller.

Price:Basic version (4.0) is free, iLife version (5.0+) is $99

iPhoto portfolio book

by Chandler, Thursday 03 of July, 2008 [18:03:25 UTC]
I have a 100 page book built in iPhoto 08 and am wanting to make one of your cool looking 14.5 x 11 portfolio books. You mentioned in your iPhoto article print dimensions for a 9 x 7. What are the necessary page dimension to print to this one. Will the whole book scale up to fit the page size or will the just have huge white borders all around them?

I agree, scalling up would leave your images grainy or blurry.

You can just use your iPhoto PDF. We have several creators who use iPhoto to create the PDF and then upload the PDF to Viovio for printing. I would use a theme with a white background.

I say that because we recommend that your file be .25 larger than the final trim size for bleed. The iPhoto file is exactly 11x8.5, so if you have a dark background then when we trim your book you may see a tiny bit of white on the sides.

Also, you could try this to see if it would work in terms of scaling the PDF up. Save the iPhoto PDF from iPhoto (print - save as pdf) and open the PDF in acrobat and save as a postscript file (print-save as poscript file). In page setup set the scaling to around 120% (may need to tweak this %) to increase the document size to 14x11 with bleed), than create a PDF from the postscript file in distiller. There is no need to scale the file if you would like to create an 11x8.5 on Viovio.

Scaling up, especially that much will more than likely leave you with very pixelated images. And the they aren't the exact same ratio's so there would be a little bit of white on the top or bottom edge.

Viovio does a nice 9x7 soft cover book. And you can find the upload dimensions necessary for a 14x11 Portfolio book here.

Printing PDFs from iPhoto, can't add the extra .25 inch

by Emily, Thursday 10 of January, 2008 [04:28:42 UTC]
Hi there, My iPhoto printing dialog box doesn't have the Page Setup option for some reason. I can't find a way to change the PDF size from 8.5x11 to 8.75 x11.25.

Is it possible for you to print the PDF at 105% or something or a way to fix this in Acrobat?

Thanks for your help

Hi Emily,

The good news is just go ahead and upload the file! We have a new option that will auto-correct the PDF and scale it for you. Once uploaded, you will see a warning and a big button to fix it on the product edit page (Step 3).

can I make square photo book from iphoto pdf file?

by Ai, Tuesday 28 of November, 2006 [19:47:04 UTC]
I would like to make a square photo book (8.5 x 8.5). I was trying to do it by using your software, but the total picture file size turned out to be more than 200 MB. Now, I am thinking about using iphoto softoware. I tried to make it, but it looks a rectangular book. Could you help me out?

As far as I know the iPhoto books will be landscape (rectangular) not square.

How do you export iPhoto books to Viovio

by , Sunday 22 of January, 2006 [04:44:50 UTC]
I have been looking for a Macintosh friendly photo book service that is more affordable than the ridiculously expensive books you can order through iPhoto. But does anyone know how to export the book layout from iPhoto to anywhere besides the Apple store? I could lay it out in inDesign, But I am looking for an easier solution. The iPhoto book layouts are very nice and I don't have to think as much.....

Hi there. Hope you haven't already given up. I've uploaded the pdfs from iPhoto with good success, especially when printing the 9 x 7 softcover. If you're printing a 8.5 x 11 landscape from Viovio, you'll have to go with hardcover which doesn't have a printed cover like the softcovers do. I would think you could upload an individual photo as the cover image while you're in the bookmaker, but don't know for certain since I've never printed the 8.5 x 11 landscape through Viovio.

If you're printing a 9 x 7 softcover and want to use the cover created in iPhoto you can do this:
1. While in your book, pick File > Print.
2. Click the Advanced button and select from 1 to 1
3. Click the PDF menu and pick Save PDF to iPhoto. A workflow will run and it'll save a copy of the cover page as a .jpg in iPhoto. You'll get a dialog box that asks where you want to save it in iPhoto — you can create a new album or put it in an existing one. If you don't see the dialog box, close all your windows--sometimes it gets buried behind stuff.

You can then export the file from iPhoto (File > Export) and upload it to Viovio. Hope that helps.

Hmmmm, we have several members who export from iPhoto to a PDF. They then upload the PDF to Viovio and we print the book for them. With PDF upload we don't provide a preview since we print exactly what you upload.
