Only three years since the United Nations has converged on Liberia and warring faction leaders agreed to dissolve, Liberia has mad enormous strides. The mornings have far surpassed the rolling UN tanks of the Swedish contingent from Camp Clara to an almost normal hustle and bustle of any developing country around the world. Traders, office workers, marketeers and smartly unformed school children all compete for a taxi seat, bus or ping-ping. The U.S. President, George Bush has just granted permission for the Peace Corps to return to Liberia and the Chinese are the newest business/development investor. After two years of a transitional government and a presidential campaign of morethan sixty would be candidates, including my husband, the final dwindles down to only a handful and the iron lady, Madame Ellen Johnson Sirleaf rising to the top. The chant, "Women are on top-Oh," has a sweet ring in a country and continent where women have traditionally not been on top. Electricity and running water are returning to this generator society and people are excited about the future. Liberia's new Army leads the sparks of nationalism and order, with the Ministry of Defense taking up the banner of reconstruction and excellence. Roads and property struggles still stifle the population at times, but response units are waiting to display their new found skills from vocational schools, donors and revived ministries.
Oddly enough, Liberia's currency remains the strongest in Africa with the exchange rate being $1 = 60 Liberian Dollars. Major hotel chains are returning to Liberia to restore and reclaim historical places like the Ducor Hotel, a beautiful picturesque point in the heart of Monrovia, where half of this countries citizens now reside after the war. Liberia is a story in the making!
