July 2006 News on excavations there:
Excavations that began on June 3 at Gaziantep's Tilbasar Castle are over for this year, said archaeologist Mehmet Onal, acting director of the Gaziantep Museum. Gaziantep is a province and city in southeastern Turkey. Tilbasar is southeast of the city.
The Tilbasar Castle and tumulus have a long history dating back to 5,000 B.C. The excavations have been carried out by a French excavation team led by Dr. Christine Kepinski-Lecomte under the supervision of Gaziantep Museum since 1994 and have revealed important information about the history of Gaziantep and the region.
A total of 27 artifacts were unearthed by a team of 33 experts, including six foreign archaeologists, during month-long excavations. The artifacts, including earthenware pots, bronze ornaments, household items, a tombstone and a clay oven dating back to the Bronze Age, were entrusted to the museum, where they will be on display after cleanup.
“In this year's excavations we uncovered a historically significant clay oven and tombstone dating back to the Bronze Age. The Tilbasar tumulus is quite important in that it is the largest excavation in the region. We will carry out more long-term work in the coming years. We want to unveil the cultural wealth of the region to share it with visitors to our museum,” Onal said.
