In 1800 William Dement moved west from an increasingly hectic and crowded Maryland, across the Ohio River, into Monroe County where he became a first settler and Justice of the Peace. The growing US Federal government had regulations for that post, one requiring him to keep a log of all matters he adjudicated. That 100 page book became both a private and public record. When William's son Samuel caught Oregon Fever and took his family west in 1851 the booklet came along, as treasured and important as his violin, his anvil and his house cat. This Dement Booklet remains a treasure kept now in safe deposit. This book reproduces significant portions of that booklet and explores in exciting detail 1,000 years of backstory.
