Two-Page Spread Images

This gallery was created to help those creative members who want to layout 2-page spreads in their books. These sample images were designed by four of our members. The wedding beach scene (before and after) were created by Mike Corbin a photographer who has a flare for fun. The living room example is from a wonderful, exciting creative member Jonathan Fong and the wedding shoe examples are from one of our fabulously creative wedding photographers Edna Licia Henriquez of www.squareeyephoto.com. The last four images (groom 2-page spread and Bride 2-page spread) were created by Dennis M. He also provides instructions as to how he created the spreads. We are thankful to all of them for their work and design!!!

Two Page Spread

Two Page Spread

If you want a continuous image to cross two pages, overlap 1/4" in the page gutter of each image for a pleasing result. You don't need to make your image larger. See how the pillow is duplicated on each side of the white line.

This image shows how to layout a 2-page spread using Photoshop. You will want some overlap of the image at the spine. In this image, the overlap is a little more than necessary but it gives I great example of how to overlap an image from the left to the right.

too much overlap left

too much overlap left

This image was created to be the left page of a two page spread. You can see the full image of the man petting the dog (including his elbow)

too much overlap right

too much overlap right

This image was created to be the right page of a two page spread. You can see the full image of the man who is petting the dog (though we don't see the dog in this picture. The two of these together actually duplicate the picture of the man in the printed book because too much has been duplicated in the separate images.

left 2page

left 2page

In this left picture you don't see the elbow of the man petting the dog so you can see some of the overlap was reduced.

right 2page

right 2page

In this right picture you only see a portion of the man petting the dog. There is some overlap but not as much as the original overlap. This will print without duplication of the image.

The creator will copy the portion of this image that is highlighted with the light pink and duplicate in on the right side image

Right Page

To compensate for the area that will dip down into the spine. The dark pink area is also part of the left image. So that area is duplicated across the left and right images.

Full Sample

Full Sample

This is the full 2-page spread. There is no overlap. You can see some of the image on the left (dark pink area) will dip down into the spine area. Some of the image on the right (link pink area) will dip down into the spine area.

Groom will not bleed down into the spine

Groom will not bleed down into the spine

This 2-page spread was created in Adobe InDesign (setup as facing pages), then converted to PDF. Creator started with one image that was stretched across the entire spread covering both left and right pages. He then placed the image exactly where he wanted it to be. Then he made a copy of it. Then he cut both in half so that one became the left half of the image and the other became the right half of the image.

Next, he took the left half and reintroduced (put back) 1/4 inch of the original image in the gutter area and shifted the image to the left by the same amount. He took the right half, and did the same thing: he put back 1/4 inch and shift to the right. Simply put, he had one image, cut it in half, then put back 1/4 to each half. That will give you the 1/2 inch overlap in the middle of the spread that's required.
